The Kia Sorento is once again the best-selling vehicle at home. The South Korean new car market is in difficulty in January at -8.5% year-on-year to 106,081. This is partly due to the Lunar New Year falling in January this year. The total volume includes 90,852 local brands (-11.6%) and 15,229 foreigners (+16.4%). Despite a harsh fall, Kia (-14%) starts the year at #1, its first win since last July and 4th victory in the past 13 months.
Suzuki Swift sales are up 44.5% year-on-year in February. The South African new vehicle market confirms its recovery with February sales up a sturdy 7.3% year-on-year to 47,978 units. This brings the year-to-date tally up 9.5% to 94,968. Toyota (+1.9%) remains the faraway leader in the manufacturers charts but sees its share thaw slightly to 24.5% vs. 25.2% so far this year.
The VinFast VF 3 is the best-selling vehicle in Vietnam in February. According to VAMA and Hyundai, new vehicle sales in Vietnam rally back up 80.2% in February to 24,628 units on devastated year-ago volumes when the market was off -52% on the year prior. The year-to-date tally is now up 27.7% to 46,595. This month and retroactively for January we have access to exclusive partial data for VinFast.
Volvo XC60 sales are up 62.2% in February. New light vehicle sales in the USA endure their first year-on-year decline in 6 months in February at -2.3% to 1,221,863 units. The year-to-date cume is now up 0.5% to 2,334,300. The SAAR is estimated at 16.1 million units, up from 15.6 million in January and 15.8 million in February 2024. Light trucks are up 0.8% to 1,001,027 and passenger cars continue to fall at -14.1% to 220,836 units.

This leads to a year-to-date tally up 2.5% to 179,628.
The VW ID.7 ranks #8 in Germany in January. New car sales in Germany edge down -2.8% year-on-year in January to 207,649 units. Volkswagen (+11.6%) posts an excellent month to 22.3% share, the carmaker’s highest in almost a decade: since July 2015 (22.5%). Mercedes (-7.5%) is in negative year-on-year but still manage a strong 9.5% share. Skoda (-1%) secures its third ever podium finish after January 2024 (#3) and June 2024 (#2).

Toyota (+4.7%) matches the market to a more reasonable 28.8% share vs. a record 36.4% in January. It is followed once again by Lexus (+31.3%) at 9% vs. 10.2% last month while CMC (+53.2%) soars past Mercedes (+29.3%) to close out the podium.
BYD is the most popular carmaker in Singapore in January. The Singaporean new car market continues to soar in January at +20.7% year-on-year to 2,703 units. As it was the case a year ago , the brands ranking is turned on its head this month. BYD (+116%) lodges a spectacular result, leading the charts outright for the 2nd time ever after February 2024.
The Hyundai Kona is up to #2 in Cyprus in February. Based on data by our local partners SEMO Cyprus and INNOSOFT , the Cyprus new car market struggles in February at just 1,284 units, off -14.5% year-on-year. Keep in mind however that February 2024 was up 48.5% over the year prior. Kia (-3.7%) dominates the market head and shoulders with 22.5% share vs. 19% so far this year and this despite a year-on-year loss.
BYD is the third best-selling carmaker in Uruguay in February. 5,617 new light vehicles found a buyer in Uruguay in February, a very solid 16.7% year-on-year improvement. As it was the case for January, this is the largest February volume in at least a decade. This way, the year-to-date tally is up 10.4% to 9,768. Fiat (+75.7%) continues to vastly dominate the brands charts with 18.1% share vs. 19.4% so far this year.
The Kia Soluto is the best-selling vehicle in Ecuador in January. The Ecuadorian new car market drops -11.8% year-on-year in January to 8,240 registrations. This is the weakest January result since 2017. After celebrating 30 years in a row at #1 , Chevrolet is hit hard this month with sales down -35.2% to 16.5% share. Kia (+3.6%) in contrast braves the negative environment and comes within just 58 sales of Chevrolet.
The Toyota RAV4 is currently the uncontested leader in Australia. The Australian new vehicle market confirms it will be softer in 2025 after a record 2024. December sales are down -2.4% year-on-year in January to 87,625 units, the 6th decline in the past 7 months. We still remain at very high levels as this is the third largest volume in history for January (add 2018 at 88,551), and sales have been negatively impacted by a shipping port strikes.
Fiat holds 21.2% of the Uruguayan market in January. New light vehicle sales in Uruguay edge up 2.8% year-on-year in January to 4,151 units. This is is the largest January volume in at least a decade. Fiat (+14.1%) improves on an already impressive year-ago performance to 21.2% share, its best since March 2022 and compared to 10.4% in December. In contrast Chevrolet (-26.1%) is in difficulty at #2 with 11% of the market vs. 15.9% over the Full Year 2024.
Renault sales surge in Belgium in February. Another disappointing month for Belgian new car sales in February at -8.1% year-on-year to 40,161 units. This way, the year-to-date tally recedes -10.7% or almost 10,000 sales to 80,755. BMW (-1.3%) leads the brands charts again but drops to 10.7% share after reaching a record 14.8% last month. Volkswagen (+6.1%) advances to #2 but the best performer of the month is Renault up a stellar 84.1% to climb to #3 overall.
The Volvo XC60 is the most popular vehicle at home. New car sales in Sweden edge up 1.3% year-on-year in March to 24,204 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 6.1% to 63,444. Rechargeable cars gain 5.8% to14,702 sales and 60.7% share vs. 58.1% a year ago. This is split between 8,386 BEVs (+0.6%) at 34.6% share vs. 34.9% in March 2024 and 6,316 PHEVs (+13.8%) at 26.1% share vs. 23.2% last year.
VW Tiguan sales are up 260.7% year-on-year in February. Yet another negative month in Finland with new car sales off -10.9% year-on-year in February to 4,700 units. The year-to-date total is off -12% as a result to 10,363. Once again hit full frontal (-26.7%), Toyota however easily remains the most popular carmaker in the country with 15.6% share. Volkswagen (+42.8%) goes completely against the grain in 2nd place with a fantastic uptick.
The Kia EV3 is an instant blockbuster in the Netherlands. The Dutch new car market is off -4.6% year-on-year in January to 32,804 units. Hybrid sales (incl. PHEV) amount to 14,934 or 45.5% share, BEVs are at 34% with 11,157 units, petrol is at 19.5% with 6,388 and diesel at 0.8% with 270. Kia (+97.2%) stuns but almost doubling its year-ago result to 12.5% share, its highest since last July.
The Nissan Patrol is the best-selling vehicle in the UAE in January. New light vehicle sales in the United Arab Emirates advance by a solid 8.6% year-on-year in January to 24,770 units. Toyota (-4.6%) endures the only year-on-year drop among the Top 6 brands but remains the faraway leader with 23.

The Nissan Versa holds 7% of the Mexican market in January. Mexican new car sales advance 5.9% year-on-year in January to 119,811 units, the best January result in 7 years:since the 123,269 registrations of January 2017. Brand leaders Nissan (+1.5%) and Chevrolet (+1%) can only muster modest lifts but easily remain on top. Volkswagen (+13.5%) and Toyota (+18.5%) fare much better below while Kia (+4.9%) rounds out the Top 5, not quite able to match the market growth.
