The annual NADA Women Driving Auto Retail (WDAR) event at the NADA Show celebrates gender diversity in the auto retail industry. Attendees will hear firsthand from inspiring women leaders who have broken barriers and built thriving careers in automotive retail. This highly anticipated gathering will be held Thursday, Jan.
I attended the 2024 Women In Automotive Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado. What makes Women In Automotive different? But none of these were Women In Automotive. This was my first Women In Automotive conference. So, like eight, maybe 10 brave men and the rest all women. I am rarely impressed these days.
My mom then became the seventh female Toyota dealer principal in the nation. I’m also the co-chair of the Women of Color Automotive Network (WOCAN) Member Experience & Events Committee. Mine is that I will make this industry better for women everywhere, and I’m working every day on that. Did I mention I’m a singer?
Karen Sutton-Ford, dealer principal of Sutton Ford in Matteson, Illinois, has been named the winner of the prestigious Ally Sees Her Award. “My mission is to show that women of color belong and can have a huge impact in the auto business.” This recognition shows what women of color bring to the industry.”
Anton Skerritt, TDSB Centrally Assigned Principal, said engaging students in the day-long event is important so they can see the opportunities available in the automotive world. The students included many women, which is a specific audience the automotive industry is targeting as part of its plan to encourage diversity, equity and inclusion.
She also graduated from the ABSC’s Dealer Academy, which is a training program that helps equip senior dealership personnel for roles as GMs and ultimately dealer principals. Shannon also makes a point to encourage more young women to attend the program and continue to advance their careers.

Though women comprise half of the workforce, they constitute less than a quarter of auto dealers and staff. Together with her mom, the dealer principal (DP) of Ike Family Dealerships, she makes up one of the few female DP/GM duos in the country. Fifty percent of Volkswagen of Marion’s sales floor staff are women.
But coming up the ranks and experiencing different countries and different perspectives on the industry, I saw more and more women and now the population is crazy. Especially when I used to beat the boys as well, I had to cop some comments, but it always motivated me to get better. I knew that there was a chance to be accepted.
As a result, an entire generation of young men and women thriving in today’s automotive sector owe a debt of gratitude to this iconic industry leader,” said Gauthier. In 1963, he started at Golden Mile Motors and became General Manager and later Dealer Principal, where he retailed more than 3,200 vehicles a year in the 1960s.
