51% of Tesla owners chose a pure ICE vehicle as a replacement for their EV in 2024. This percentage was far higher in 2020, when 76% of Tesla buyers went back to ICE. Buyers are more willing to swap their Tesla for an EV from a legacy automaker. According to a recent study, the majority of Tesla owners have abandoned their electric vehicles for combustion engine models in 2024, with a mere 32 percent opting to stay electric.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has recalled seven examples of the C-Class as a manufacturing fault could lead to a vehicle fire. “Due to a manufacturing defect, wiring harness earth connection bolts may not have been fastened with sufficient torque,” the carmaker said in its recall notice. “This may increase the electrical resistance of the wiring harness and could result in a vehicle fire.

Kia Australia has recalled 6878 examples of the twin-turbo V6-powered Stinger sedan, due to a fault which could lead to a vehicle fire. “The left-hand turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly may deteriorate due to heat from the exhaust manifold,” the carmaker said in its recall notice. “If this occurs, oil could leak into the engine bay and contact hot engine components, resulting in a vehicle fire.

Mazda Australia has recalled 860 examples of the CX-60 and CX-90 diesel SUV to fix a problem with its transmission. “Due to a software issue in the transmission control module, if the brake pedal is firmly depressed to stop the vehicle the clutch for the engine and electric motor may remain disengaged during deceleration,” the recall notice says. “If this occurs, power from the engine or electric motor may not be transmitted when the accelerator pedal is depressed.” ̶

The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s best-selling car for the fourth time in its history last month, while also setting a new delivery record for the nameplate. In July, Toyota delivered 5933 RAV4s to Australian buyers, placing it ahead of the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux utes for the top spot. It represents a new monthly record for RAV4 deliveries, eclipsing the 5857 examples of the SUV shipped to customers in April this year – which beat the previous record of 4825 examples sold in August 2020.

Toyota’s RAV4 medium SUV was the most popular vehicle last month, with the market back up for a record July. New car sales last month represent a new July record, with the Australian market appearing to bounce back from a dip the month before. Last month 99,486 vehicles were delivered locally, 2.7 per cent more than in July 2023 – which was itself previously the highest July record, according to VFACTS data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
