Dacia is only outsold by Fiat in January. The Italian new car market is up 10.6% year-on-year in January to 141,946 units according to UNRAE. Private sales are up 10.2% to 88,083 and 61.1% share vs. 61.5% a year ago, self registrations are down -5% to 11,357 and 7.9% share vs. 9.2%, long term leases edge up 4.8% to 30,406 and 21.1% share vs. 22.3% and short term rentals surge a whopping 306.7% to 6,170 and 4.3% share vs. 1.2% in January 2023.

Funding and control of Polestar is shifting. On Thursday Volvo announced it is shifting "full operational and financial support" of its Polestar subsidiary to Chinese-owned Geely. Volvo itself is a subsidiary of Geely, which snapped up the Swedish automaker from Ford in 2010. Volvo and Geely never fully merged, but Geely owns a Geely owns a 78.7%.

The Toyota Corolla misses out on the monthly top spot for just 90 sales. New car sales in Spain advance 7.3% year-on-year in January to 68,685. Almost the entire growth is due to sales to rental companies, up 74.6% to 7,238. Private sales grow 6.3% to 34,037 and company sales actually regress at -1.6% to 27,410. Despite this robust score, we remain 20.5% below the pre-pandemic level of January 2020.

Lincoln cut 100 U.S. dealerships in 2023 and plans to cut 100 more this year in an effort to boost profitability from its retail network, Automotive News reported last week. This will reportedly leave Lincoln with roughly 400 U.S. dealerships by the end of 2024. That's about 40% fewer than in 2021, but still more than most other luxury brands.

It has been revealed that $1 million worth of damage was done to GM’s Factory Zero electric vehicle factory in Detroit, Michigan, when a fire broke out on December 19 last year. The automaker says the fire was likely triggered by a forklift puncturing a battery materials container. Sales of the long-awaited Polestar 4 have just started in Australia, following the electric model’s launch in China at the end of December. Production of Australian-spec Polestar 4 models is set to begin in mid-2024, with deliveries expected to commence from August. The Polestar 4 falls in size between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 and features a unique sedan-crossover design, somewhat reminiscent of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
