The Skoda Kamiq breaks its volume and share records in January. New car sales in Czechia climb up a very solid 18.8% in January to 20,361 units. Homegrown behemoth Skoda (+45.9%) shoots up to a mammoth 42.3% share, its highest in exactly 4 years: since the 43.3% of January 2020. In fact Skoda is almost solely responsible for the overall volume growth this month, with the next 8 carmakers all trailing the market.

Pagani has revealed a more extreme version of its already over-the-top Huayra R track car. The new Huayra R Evo is no mere update as the car features a new body, a thoroughly overhauled engine, and the ability to remove the roof. The new body represents the biggest change over the Huayra R. It adopts a long-tail design, similar to what Pagani.

The Skoda Octavia is on the German podium for the 2nd time ever. German new car sales shoot up 19.1% year-on-year in January to 213,553 units. Volkswagen (+12.1%) trails the market slightly but scores a solid 19.5% share vs. 18.2% over the Full Year 2023. Mercedes (-0.5%) is soft year-on-year but at 10% share it is well above its December level of 8.2%.

Lexus applied for trademark protection with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 1 for the name RZ F, hinting that a high-performance version of the RZ electric compact crossover may be in the works. Lexus has also already toyed with the idea of a high-performance RZ. It rolled out the RZ Sport concept in 2023 and that concept.

The Lexus LBX is already up to #42 for its first full month of sales. The Japanese new vehicle market starts the year in difficult fashion with January sales down -12.4% to 334,838. The negative result is partly due to the safety test falsification scandal at Daihatsu which paused shipments in late December and completely shut down production for the entire month of January.

A company spokesman said a small electronic component, thought to be a microchip, needs to be replaced before the vehicles can be released and shipped to dealerships. Chery Australia has recalled 5901 examples of its Omoda 5 , after discovering a defect which can result in brake failure for the small SUV. The recall affects all Chery Omoda 5s sold in Australia since local deliveries began in mid-2023. “Due to a manufacturing defect, the bolt securing the brake pipe union may not have been tightened sufficiently. This could cause the brake fluid to leak and result in reduced braking performance,” Chery said in its recall notice.
