China wholesales March 2025: Tesla Model Y #1, Xiaomi SU7 breaks volume record

The Xiaomi SU7 sells over 29,000 units in a single month. According to data by CAAM and CPCA, new Passenger Vehicle wholesales in China shoot up 8.9% year-on-year in March to 2,412,000 units, a record for the month. This includes 1,257,000 SUVs (+9.2%), 1,046,000 cars (+8.7%) and 108,000 MPVs (+7.3%). The Q1 volume is up 11.3% to 6,277,000 sales, including 3,331,000 SUVs (+9.9%), 2,665,000 cars (+11.1%) and 280,000 MPVs (+32.8%).

OEMs with high U.S. production footprint not immune to tariffs

A new analysis by market intelligence firm IDTechEx was released in the wake of the United States implementation of a broad range of tariffs. It found that, of the 1.3 million electric vehicles sold in 2024, 66% were assembled in the U.S., nearly 12% in Canada and Mexico (1.2% and 10.3%, respectively), and around 22% elsewhere in the world. The firm noted that there are exceptions for CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico-Agreement) qualifying vehicles, and additional tariffs on component sourcing.
