Japan's Aspark is working on a new, more potent version of its Owl electric hypercar. The new version is dubbed the Owl SP600, and during testing a prototype was taken to a top speed of 438.7 kph (approximately 272.6 mph), as measured by an onboard Racelogic V-Box. Should a production version eventuate with the same top speed, the Owl SP600 will.

The Ford Ranger holds 10.5% of the New Zealand market in May. New Zealand new vehicle sales drop a harsh -23.6% year-on-year in May to just 10,186 units, leading the year-to-date tally down -13.3% to 53,271. Passenger cars implode -40.3% to 1,175 and 11.5% share, SUVs are off -31.6% to 5,180 and Light Commercials edge down -0.9% to 3,142. Year-to-date, passenger cars are off -34.3% to 6,221, SUVs down -18.7% to 27,758 and LCVs actually up 7.6% to 15,864.

BMW sales climb 13.3% year-on-year in negative market The new car market in Luxembourg returns to negative territory in May at a harsh -12.6% year-on-year to 3,847 units. This way the year-to-date tally is off -4.4% to 20,761. Volkswagen (+1.8%) retains the brands top spot with 13.3% share, however BMW (+13.3%) is not far behind at 12.6%, one percentage point above its year-to-date level.

The VW Golf hits 7.2% share in May, its highest since December 2014. New car sales in Austria recede -3.9% year-on-year in May to 19,820 units, however the year-to-date volume remains in positive at +2.2% to 104,420. Volkswagen (+14.8%) defies the negative market to improve to a stellar 18% share, compared to 15.1% year-to-date. The next three carmakers all fall heavily: Skoda is down -27.7% to 7.6% share vs. 9.5% YTD, BMW falls -10.1% and Audi is off -10.4%.

Volkswagen unveiled an updated Golf range earlier this year, but noticeably missing was the high-performance Golf R grade. It's set to debut this summer and VW took to social media on Tuesday to confirm the car is coming with 329 hp, generated by the familiar 2.0-liter turbo-4. The 329-hp rating matches the output of the Golf R 20th Anniversary.

Once again, sales of new assembled light vehicles in Pakistan rally up 107% year-on-year in May to 10,949 units, keeping in mind May 2023 was down -76.9% on the year prior. Lexus Australia has recalled 184 examples of the petrol-powered LX 600 SUV, after it was discovered debris could be in its twin-turbo V6 engine. “For involved vehicles there is a possibility that certain machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine during manufacturing,” the carmaker said in its recall notice. “For engines impacted, there may be additional pressure on the main bearings due to the debris adhering to the bearings.
